Abstract
405,186. Hinges; boxes. SCHMIDT, E., 3, Ilmenauerstrasse, Grunewald, Berlin. July 1, 1933, No. 18735. [Class 65 (ii).] In a hinge for the lid of a tin box, formed of the concentrically rolled edges of the lid and box, the rolled portions being provided with one or more transverse interengaging grooves to prevent relative longitudinal movement, the grooves are tapered or wedgeshaped in the peripheral direction so as to produce a jamming action when the lid is opened, the lid being thus frictionally held in any open position. In the Figure, the curled edge 3 of the lid bears on the curled edge 4 of the box and is provided with a part-circumferential groove on its inner side, forming a projection 7 on its outer side, of depth increasing gradually towards the edge of the metal ; the box part 4 is formed with a similar projection fitting into the groove in the part 3. As the lid is opened, the shallow part of the groove in part 3 rides over the deeper part of the projection on part 4, producing friction between the parts to hold the lid open.
