Abstract
404,554. Steam traps. COLLEY, C. J., 4475, West Pine Boulevard, St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. July 4, 1933, No. 18965. Convention date, Oct. 3, 1932. [Class 64 (ii).] The water vented by a steam trap of the intermittent dis charge type actuates a fluid pressure respon sive element or the discharge side of the trap which operates mechanism to count the discharges. The water from the trap entering at port 23 drives the piston 22 back so that it may escape through port 33 and actuates the counting-mechanism 13 by linkwork 36. Clearance is provided between the piston and its cylinder to allow the fluid leaking from the trap to escape without operating the counting- mechanism. Alternatively, a bye-pass tube may be provided for this purpose. The counting-mechanism may record and print the number of times water has been vented during successive predetermined intervals of time. The piston and cylinder arrangement may be replaced by a Bourdon tube, flexible diaphragm or bellows. A check valve is then placed in the discharging line to prevent changes in the pressure in this line, owing to the discharge of other traps into it, from operating the counting mechanism. The valve also serves to restrict the flow of the vented water and cause a sufficient pressure to be built up to actuate the counting means. A flap valve may also be used as an alternative pressure-responsive means.
