Abstract

Sawdust or other fine dry wood powder, without the addition of extraneous agglutinants, is raised to a temperature below the point of the decomposition of the natural binding ingredients which it contains and then is subjected to heavy pressure, so that the binding gums, resins, and the like which have been liberated by the heat, are spread evenly throughout the material by the pressure and consolidate the whole into a block of moulded wood, or a moulded article such as a tobacco-pipe. The process is usually carried out in a hydraulic press with heated platens and mixtures of sawdust from various woods are preferable in order to equalize the varying amounts of binding material occurring naturally in the different kinds. The temperature and pressure employed will vary with the kind of wood employed. Articles may also be moulded roughly by pressure only in halves, to be subsequently joined under heat and pressure in a finishing-mould. Fire-proofing elements and mineral fillers may be incorporated into the mixture.
