Abstract

399,921. Directing vehicle lamps. TRITTON, J. S., 4, Park Road, Surbiton Hill, Surrey. May 25, 1932, Nos. 14803/32 and 1708/33. [Classes 75 (ii) and 75 (iii).] In means for swivelling a pair of lamps, or their reflectors, one at a time and with a harmonic motion preferably from the steering- gear, in which an arm on each spring-controlled lamp spindle engages a fixed abutment in the normal position and is adapted to be freely engaged by a guided rod which imparts motion to the lamp, the rod is actuated through a transmission medium within a casing adapted for application to a vehicle to suit the contour thereof. In one form, the cylinder 12 of a plunger 15, adapted to engage the arm 16 of one lamp 5, is connected by a tube 14 to the cylinder of a plunger 26 in a member 20 and the oppositely-disposed cylinder for the plunger operating the other lamp 6 is connected by a tube 32 to the cylinder of a plunger 24, the plungers 26, 24 being connected to a slidable rod 22 connected by a link 21 with the drop arm 4. The system is filled with oil &c. and the cylinders in the member 20 communicate through tubes 28 with a reservoir 27 to allow inflow of liquid when the piston 24 or 26 is retracted beyond the inlet. In modifications, the plungers 24, 26 may be fixed to the chassis and the member 20 connected with the steering-gear, or the member 20 may be carried by a cross-bar between the lamps, the plungers 24, 26 being actuated through tubes from the steering gear and the rod 22 being extended to operate the lamps. In a second form, two separate cylinders are arranged on opposite sides of the drop arm, the plungers being operated as by cams on, or connected with, the boss of the drop arm. In a third form, Fig. 7 (not shown), the rods 15 are controlled by push-and-pull cables extending through cubes 14, 32 to plungers in a member 20. The table may consist of links connected by balls which fit the tube, and the rods may be provided with stirrups having a cross-piece adapted to pull the lamp arm against the action of its spring. In a fourth form, the lamps are swivelled by a transverse rod 41, Fig. 10, slidable in guides 42, 43 and controlled by a cable in a tube 14. In a fifth form, a connecting rod may transmit the steering movement to a crosshead guided beneath the bonnet, the further transmission to the lamp rods taking place through tubes. The second Provisional Specification states also that a rear lamp may be controlled by a push-and-pull cable. Specification 278,464, [Class 75 (iii), Lamps &c., Details &c], is referred to.
