Abstract

326,265. Hodson, A. E. Dec. 18, 1928. Vehicle lamps, directing.-Relates to swivelling and dipping motor car headlamps by hydraulic transmission means. Each headlamp is carried by a fitting comprising cylinders and pistons one set of which is connected with an hydraulic fitting connected to the steering mechanism and the other (for dipping) to an hydraulic fitting under control of the driver. The construction illustrated is one in which only one lamp is swivelled at a time. Figs. 9 and 8 show diagrammatically the dipping and swivelling systems separated, 12, Fig. 9, being a member rotatable in horizontal bearings in one or other direction by a pair of pistons connected through pipe lines 44, 46 to a pair of cylinders u, w in a fitting on the steering column and carrying the lamp support 27 by means of a vertical axle 26, Fig. 8, rotatable by a plunger 19 having the pipe connection 42 with an hydraulic cylinder b in a fitting connected by a lever m with the steering. Cylinders t, v and pipe lines 45, 47 are the corresponding dipping connections for the other lamp and c and 42<1> the other swivelling connections. Referring now to the detail construction, the lever m, Fig. 1, connected with the steering drop arm, operates a slidable rod e carrying rods f, g slidable in pistons h, i in the cylinders 6, c communicating through the flexible pipes 42, 42<1> with bores 14 in the two members 12, Fig. 5, carrying the lamps. The end 19 of a spring-pressed plunger 18 works in the bore 14 and the plunger is connected by a recess 22 and a pin 33 with a spindle 25, to the upper end of which is secured the plate 27, Fig. 4, provided with a lamp socket 28. Each member 12 is rocked in bearings 9, 10 for dipping its lamp, it having a semi-circular recess 35 forming abutments for pistons 38, 39, Fig. 7, in cylinders 40, 41 communicating through flexible pipes (44, 46 or 45, 47) with two pairs of cylinders t, v or u, w in a fitting s, Fig. 2, clamped to the steering column q. The pistons 2 are adapted to be displaced by pusher plates z, z<1> carried by a slidable rod y operated by a hand-lever 6. All the cylinders and pipes are filled with oil. To effect swivelling of both lamps simultaneously, two cylinders are provided on each side of the lever m as in the dipping device and the plunger 18 is acted upon at both ends by fluid pressure, the spring 21 being dispensed with. One of the, lamps may be swivelled automatically towards the near side of the road during the dipping movement as by means of a lug 49 connected by a rod 50 to an eyelet 51 on the bearing 9.
