Abstract
399,292. Measuring-tapes. RABONE & SONS, Ltd., J. and RABONE, E. L., Whitmore Street, Birmingham. July 5, 1932, No. 18938. [Class 106 (ii).] Relates to openwinders or tapes which are not enclosed in a box when wound, and consists in arranging the guiding means for the tape to be movable relatively to the drum mounting so as automatically to permit free movement of the tape through the guide whatever the manner in which the instrument is held. The guiding means comprises parallel rollers 4 as heretofore but instead of being fixed they are mounted between the outer ends of radial arms 6a one on each side of the bar members 7 between which the drum is mounted. The arm 6a on the side of the crank 8 is mounted on a bearing ring 8a and the arm on the other side has its bearing on the pin forming the bearing for the drum at that side. The arms can move freely independently of the drum and thus the guide for the tape 5 can be moved into or will assume the requisite position whether the device is held in the right or the left hand for manipulation.
