Abstract

398,960. Motor power plant; speed governors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and PREISIG, P., 12, Danson Mead, Welling, Kent. May 27, 1932, No. 15096. [Classes 57 and 110 (iii).] In motor power plant, particularly for ship propulsion, in which a reciprocating engine exhausts into a turbine, the turbine driving a generator which feeds a motor on the shaft of the reciprocator, the turbine is governed so that its speed is maintained in a definite relation to the speed of the main reciprocator shaft. This is effected by varying the exhaust pressure of the reciprocator, that is, by varying the inlet of the turbine thus transferring load from one power unit to another. The figure shows the turbine unit of the plant with its valve and governor gear. The turbine, which receives its supply through a plpe 7, has two stages 8a, 8b and is controlled by a bye pass valve 16 which is actuated by a servo-motor 15. The pilotvalve 14 of this motor is moved through the linkage 12 by a governor 26 driven from the turbine shaft. It is also under the influence of a governor 2 driven by the shaft 1 of reciprocator. This governor acts through a fluid relay 18 which varies the pressure in a chamber 21 containing a plate 22 bearing upon a spring 23. This spring acts upon a plate on the governor rod 20 and varies the setting of the governor. In a modification the centrifugal governor 26 is replaced by an oil pump driven by the turbine shaft. The oil, the pressure of which depends on the speed, actuates the bye pass valve through a servo-motor, and its pressure is influenced also by a leak-away valve controlled by the governor 2. At excessive speeds an emergency governor actuates a valve 41 to bye pass the steam from the pipe 7 to the condenser 9.
