Abstract
Sodium cyanide is obtained by completely dehydrating sodium carbonate decahydrate at a temperature such that no dissolving, melting, or fritting of the salt occurs and passing hydrocyanic acid or gases containing the same at elevated temperatures over the dehydrated carbonate. Temperatures not exceeding 400 DEG C., say 350 DEG C., may be employed. The sodium carbonate decahydrate may be dehydrated by drawing air over the solid at 32-33 DEG C. The gaseous hydrocyanic acid may be passed through a series of tubes containing the carbonate heated in an electric furnace, the first tube being removed and a fresh tube being added to the last of the series periodically. Examples are given.
