[Class 44.] A lock comprises a two-part casing 2, 3, the part 2 enclosing the bolt 1 and spring 5, and the part 3 enclosing a cylinder 6 having toothed engagement with the bolt and housing a number of tumblers 9 controlling a bolt 7 for locking the cylinder 6 to the casing 3. The bolt 7 is moved by springs 10 from its locking position in the slot 8 of the casing 3 when the tumblers are turned by a key to withdraw the bolt 1. During this movement, fingers 16 on the tumblers enter a slot 17 in the bolt 7 and hold it in the inner position. During the reverse movement of the tumblers, cam surfaces 15 force the bolt 7 into the outer locking position. Fixed wards carrying pins of various lengths to engage recesses 9a on the key are mounted on a pin 11 in the cylinder 6. In a modification a locking pin may be moved into engagement with the tumblers by turning a handle, and the same movement may move other locking pins into peripheral recesses in the cylinder 6. In another form, the bolt 1 is in two parts, the outer part being pressed out by a light spring, the inner by aÀ heavy spring, the latter being operated by the cylinder 6 and having a hook connection with the outer part.
