Abstract
398,317. Making tubes. GARNER, J. R., Sheffield Tube Works, Alsing Road, Wincobank, Sheffield. July 7, 1932, No. 19178. Divided on 396,841. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] In making tubes the mandrel 5 is provided with a pointed or conical end 6 which pierces the billet as it is being cupped or reduced by pushing through dies. Fig. 2 shows the billet after this operation. The edges may be rounded at 8, 9. The hole made is then swaged down by hammering on a short mandrel to the nozzle form in Fig. 3 through which the gripper of a draw bench may be inserted. Fig. 4 shows a plant layout in which the billet passes from furnace 13 through the piercer 14, being cupped at 15, and loosened on its mandrel at 18, and passes over a cross conveyer 19 when the mandrel is retracted at 21 and returned via 23, and cross conveyer 24 to the mandrel guide 16 while the tube or billet passes to the nozzle forming hammer 25 and delivered at 27 to a draw bench for further reduction, all being done in one heat. 17 is the mandrel motor, 22 the extractor motor and 28 a saw for cutting off the wide end if desired.
