Abstract

Triacidyl borates are prepared by heating boric acid or its anhydride with one or more organic acids, other than acetic acid, in the presence of at least an equivalent quantity of an inorganic acid chloride or organic acid anhydride. When preparing borates of the higher organic acids, it is preferable to employ the anhydrides of lower organic acids in the conversion. According to the examples, (1) tristearyl borate is obtained by heating stearic acid with boric acid or boron trioxide and acetic anhydride, and distilling off the acetic acid formed together with the excess of acetic anhydride; similar products result by replacing the stearic acid with lauric acid, coconut oil acids or benzoic acid; (2) cinnamic boric anhydride is prepared by heating cinnamic acid with boric acid in the presence of thionyl chloride until the evolution of hydrochloric acid ceases. Other inorganic acid chlorides mentioned are phosphorus tri- and pentachlorides.
