Abstract
Water-insoluble polymerized vinyl compounds are incorporated in relatively small amounts in textile fabrics in order to improve their wear-resistance, to reduce their tendency to slip or ladder, and to render them more waterproof. Fabrics thus treated may be used for making tops of fancy shoes. When fabrics so treated are calendered between heated rolls, a glossy finish is produced with great adhesion between warp and weft. The fabric may be woven, knitted, or netted fabric containing yarns, filaments, straw, or bristles, and may be of any textile material. The material may contain yarns of a cellulose ester or ether, natural silk, wool, cotton, flax, or reconstituted cellulose. The polymerized vinyl compound may be obtained by polymerizing vinyl esters such as vinyl acetate, propionate, or phthalate, the compound formed by treating a vinyl halide with zinc dust, or compounds such as styrene. Polymerization may be effected by sunlight, light from a mercury vapour lamp, heat, or in other known manner in the presence or absence of catalysts such as uranium salts or benzoyl peroxide. The compounds may be employed in various states of polymerization. They are preferably applied as solutions in alcohol, benzene, toluene or other solvent. They may be applied as aqueous dispersions with the aid of soap or Turkey Red oil. The fabric may be treated by dipping, or mechanical impregnation such as padding or spraying. If desired the solution or emulsion may be locally applied in any desired pattern by printing or by the use of stencils, and dyestuffs may be added. In an example, a twill weave fabric consisting of yarns of cellulose acetate is impregnated with a solution of polymerized vinyl acetate in benzene in a concentration of 1-2,5 per cent. The amount of liquor taken up by the fabric is such that the amount of polymerized vinyl compound remaining on it is 1-2,5 per cent of the weight of the fabric. Specifications 369,944, 369,945, and 372,327 are referred to.
