Abstract
519,343. Dyeing and finishing textiles. . CALICO PRINTERS' ASSOCIATION, Ltd., LANTZ, L. A., and MILLER,.W. S. Aug. 12, 1938, No. 23803. [Class 15 (ii)] Resistance to shrinkage on washing and, where necessary, - resistance to creasing, are imparted to animal textile fibres of natural origin, such as wool or silk in the 'form of fabrics, yarns, threads, fleeces or loose fibres, such animal fibres, being either alone or admixed with materials inert to the process, by treating them with formaldehyde and an acid, drying at a temperature at which the fibres are not substantially tendered, prolonging the heating, if necessary, to complete the reaction, washing and drying. Dyestuffs, e.g. acid or direct dyes, may be incorporated in the impregnating solution or may be applied to the fibres locally or otherwise prior to the impregnation. Pattern effects are also obtainable by applying locally a substance which neutralises acid and then inpregnating with formaldehyde, acid and a dyestuff. To improve the shrinkage resistance of a fabric the drying, and in some cases also the subsequent heating, may be performed while maintaining the material at or slightly above the desired final dimensions. In examples, (1) a heavy woollen cloth is impregnated with an aqueous solution containing'formaldehyde and sulphuric acid, dried for 10 minutes at 70‹C. while maintaining the desired final dimensions, heated for 10 minutes at 130‹C., washed and dried ; (2) a light woollen crepe fabric, dyed with tartrazine, is impreg-, nated in an aqueous solution containing formaldehyde and sulphuric acid, dried for five - minutes at 70‹C. at slightly above the'desired dimensions, heated for 1 minute at 130‹C., washed and dried ; (3) a similar fabric, dyed with Chrysophenine G, is impregnated with an aqueous solution containing formaldehyde and haphthalene-2-sulphonic acid, dried for five minutes at 130‹.C. at slightly above the desired dimensions, washed and dried ; (4) a similar undyed. fabric was treated as in (3) with replacement of the acid by phenol-p-sulphonic acid ; (5') a woollen shirting fabric is impregnated with an aqueous solution containing formaldehyde and tartaric acid, dried for two minutes at 150‹C. at slightly above the desired dimensions, washed and dried ; (6) a woollen crepe fabric is impregnated with dilute sulphuric acid, squeezed, impregnated with an aqueous solution of formaldehyde, dried for ten minutes at 110‹C. at slightly above the desired dimensions, washed and dried; (7) a silk crÛpe-de-chine fabric is impregnated with an aqueous solution containing formaldehyde and naphthalene-2-sulphonic acid, dried for 15 minutes at 70 ‹C. at slightly above the desired dimensions, washed and dried ; . (8) a similar silk fabric is impregnated with an aqueous solution containing formaldehyde and sulphuric acid, dried for 5 minutes at 150‹C. at slightly above the required dimensions, washed and dried ; (9) a crepe fabric having a cellulose acetate warp and a silk weft is impregnated with an aqueous solution containing formaldehyde and naphthalene-2-sulphonic acid, dried for ten minutes at 70‹C. at slightly above the desired dimensions, washed and dried. The cellulose acetate is unaffected by the treatment. The processes described in Specifications. 450,620, 455,472 and 491,779 are disclaimed. Specification 477,084 also is referred to.
