Abstract

The highly-heated part of a firebox and the less heated part are made of different suitably chosen alloys or of the same material differently heat treated to give the highly heated part a high resiliency and the less heated part a high ductility. The parts may be made separately and secured together by welding or riveting. A firebox may be made of an alloy consisting of 98 per cent of copper, 0,6-1,5 per cent of nickel, 0,7-0,4 per cent of silicon, and up to 1 per cent of iron, which is ductile when unhardened and highly resilient hardened even when heated. Other suitable alloys are those containing at least 95 per cent of copper and at least two of the following elements, iron, silicon, nickel, manganese, tin, chromium, beryllium, aluminium, and cobalt. The entire firebox may be first hardened by heating, quenching, and reheating, and then the parts which are to be of high ductility heated to a red heat, or after heat and quenching only the parts which are to be of high resilience are subjected to a tempering heat. Another method is to quench only the parts to be hardened, the other parts being cooled slowly.
