Abstract
396,789. Signalling - apparatus for road vehicles. PAGE, G., 35, Thornbury Road, Isleworth, Middlesex. Feb. 9, 1932, Nos. 3786 and 17736. [Class 118 (ii).] The reflecting mirror on a road vehicle is mounted on one side of a box divided into compartments each provided with a lamp and is provided with signalling devices selectively illuminated by a switch controlled by the driver. The front of the box is also provided with a direction indicator and a compartment may be provided with a light used for parking. Fig. 1 shows the mirror or rear side of the box and Fig. 2 the front side according, to one construction. The box is divided by a frame 9 into compartments 10 .. 13, each containing a lamp. The mirror is thinly silvered and provided with stencils or otherwise rendered opaque except at the parts forming the signals which are left transparent and may be tinted. As shown in Fig. 1, the direction-indicating arrow 19 is double-ended and divided by the frame 9. The arrow is formed'by terminating the silvering along the line 18 and completing the arrow shape by an opaque plate 21 secured to the inside of the mirror. The rest of the mirror is made opaque except for the word " stop " and the aperture for the parking light 16. Alternatively the silvering may be removed by sand-blasting to form the signals. The front of the box is formed with a long narrow opening covered with tinted glass provided' with a direction indicator and with an opening 6 for the parking light. In the case of police or other official vehicles, the mirror may have the signals "Police" and "Stop," and the front plate may have one or both signals. The box may have an intermediate shield to prevent the light from approaching or overtaking vehicles illuminating the signals and may be mounted on a telescopic tube, operated by a Bowden cable or electrically and adapted in its movement to close the circuit of the lamps. The signalling apparatus may be used in conjunction with a signalling device at the rear of the vehicle and a wiring system is described in which the direction indicator is controlled by a two-way switch, the stop signal by the brake, and the parking light by a separate switch. A time switch may be inserted in the lighting circuit. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 249,727, 251,983, 258,975, 271,917, [all in Class 118 (ii), Signals], and 351,935.
