Abstract

396,538. Apparatus for teaching aviators. AIR SERVICE TRAINING, Ltd., JENKINS, H. F., and BERLYN, R. C., Hamble, near Southampton. June 25, 1932, No. 17976. [Class 4.] Apparatus for ground flying instruction comprises means for temporarily deflecting the movable element of an indicator simulating a magnetic compass upon movement of an imitation throttle lever or a control column in order to simulate the effect of accelerations upon an aircraft compass. A dummy throttle lever 10 and control-column 13 are connected by links to opposite ends of a lever 12 which is connected intermediately to piston rod 14 of a piston 16 working in a cylinder 15. The ends of cylinder 15 communicate by passages 18, 19 and oppositely directed nozzles 20 with the damping liquid in compass 17 whereby movement of either throttle or control column will produce a rotary flow of the damping liquid in compass 17 which will cause the indicator to swing from a true position and gradually to return to the same. Baffles 21 may be fitted in the compass bowl. Means are provided for reversing the flow of liquid on piston displacement or for byepassing the cylinder from the compass in order to simulate the effects obtained in flight on different magnetic courses. These means comprise a valve 23 which may be pre-set by the instructor or connected to compass swinging means as described in Specification 396,537. The apparatus may be combined with the pitch indicator described in Specification 396,539.
