Abstract

Denicotining is effected by moistening the leaves with pure water, slightly alkaline water or a virulent alkaline liquor containing tobacco bacteria, permitting free or copious access of air while fermentation is effected, and removing the excess of alkalinity produced by the addition of an organic acid. A cloth soaked in acetic acid may be laid over the leaves, or the acid may be applied by sprinkling. Volatile aromatic bases removed by the air current are collected and returned to the tobacco leaves. Specification 364,464 is referred to. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the leaves may be leached out and the extract fermented. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
