Jan. 15, 1932, No. 1273. Convention date, Jan. 15, 1931. [Class 38 (v).] Earth leakage protection of apparatus for example the generator or transformer 1 is effected by employing a wattmeter relay 4 tuned to a frequency different from the fundamental frequency of the apparatus so as to be particularly sensitive to the frequency superimposed on the apparatus by a frequency generator 7 which, as shown, may be located in the connection from neutral to earth. In this way selective protection against internal earth faults may be obtained without the use of very accurately matched summation transformers 3 which in conjunction with the transformer 5 in the earth. connection supply one coil of the relay the other coil being supplied with a current which is a measure of the voltage of the frequency generator. The resultant current from the transformers 3, 5 may be amplified by means of a thermionic valve and the amplified current supplied to the relay. Where the protected apparatus has an insulated neutral, an artificial neutral may be formed and to this neutral the frequency generator connected. The frequency generator may be brought into use only on fault.
