Abstract

A refining-agent for removing oxides and gases from molten aluminium and aluminium alloys comprises one or more liquid chlorides, or a mixture of chlorides at least one of which is liquid, in admixture with an inert absorbent substance other than charcoal, for example kieselguhr. The liquid chloride may be carbon tetrachloride, and the mixture may comprise also a biflicoride. The refining agent may be enclosed for use in a container of aluminium or of the aluminium alloy to be refined or of one of the components of the alloy.
