Abstract
389,007. Aircraft-sustaining parachutes. ROUG•, C. R. M. A. DE, MercuÞs, Lot, France. Aug. 6, 1932, No. 22125. [Class 4.] In aircraft provided with sustaining parachutes means are provided for pulling in the parachute cable thereby causing the parachute rapidly to approach the craft in order to retard the fall of the latter, just prior to alighting. A parachute 1, Fig. 1, is connected by a cable 2, passing through an elevated guide member 4 disposed vertically above the centre of gravity of the craft, to a winch 7 in the fuselage. Winch 7 may be driven by the propelling engine or by a separate engine and is provided with a brake 8. In a modification, Fig. 2, cable 2 is connected to a piston 8<1> slidable in a cylinder 9. Piston 8<1> is drawn from position 13 to the position shown under the pull of the opened parachute, this movement being damped by gas trapped in the top portion of the tube. The parachute is hauled in by supplying pressure gas to the cylinder above the piston through a valve 14. Either of the two devices described may be put into operation automatically by a ground engaging member such as shown in Fig. 3, which shows a control cable 19 adapted to be tensioned by a spring 18 which is kept compressed by weight 15 until relieved of the load thereof by contact of the weight with the ground.
