Abstract
386,518. Squirting. MOND, A. L., 19, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London.-(I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges. ; Frankfort-on-Main, Germany.) May 20, 1932, No. 14360. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Making bars.- Girders, tubes, &c. of progressively -diminishing thickness of metal are formed by extruding a billet e through a die b with the use of a mandrel d of rapidly tapering cross section which travels through the die. A tube so formed has a constant outer but an increasing inner diameter. Girders with flanges steadily decreasing in thickness may be similarly formed with the use of one or more tapered mandrel members. In the formation of a form g, Fig. 4b, tapered in the same direction on the inner and outer faces, the outer part of the mandrel f is formed of a series of flat springs which yield to allow the section which is of slower taper than the mandrel, to expand the mandrel freely. The mandrel d may, if necessary be detachably secured to the ram c and be formed of a number of detachable parts. The mandrel may be formed to produce a steady taper, or the billet may not be shaped exactly to fit the mandrel, but itself be formed, when cast, to produce a steady taper. The process is applicable to alloys of copper, lead, aluminium, and magnesium, and to girders for aircraft.
