Abstract
884,410. Extruding; making tubes; working at specified temperatures. T.I. (GROUP SERVICES) Ltd. May 18, 1960 [June 2, 1959], No. 18818/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A beryllium tube is made by forming a hollow beryllium billet a by casting, hotpressing or sintering beryllium powder, placing a metal core b within the billet and an envelope c around the billet, heating the assembly to 900-1100‹ C., extruding the assembly through a die g and removing the core and envelope. The core and envelope are preferably of steel and have end-pieces d secured by tack welding e, Fig. 1 (not shown). A coating of lime is applied to the inner and outer surfaces of the billet to prevent welding to the steel. After heating to 1050‹ C., the assembly is placed in a billet container f and extruded by a ram h through die g. Subsequently the envelope is removed by pickling in nitric acid and the core is removed mechanically after stretching it to reduce its diameter.
