Abstract
Artificial silk is obtained from silk fibroin or other albuminous material by dissolving it in a known solvent, adding an alkyl ester of an aliphatic or inorganic acid to the solution, and extruding the solution into a coagulant. The addition of alkyl ester to the spinning solution enables it to be kept for a considerable time without loss of viscosity which would otherwise occur owing to decomposition of the fibroin. The treated spinning solutions lead to the production of artificial silk which can be drawn out to a fine denier and which is of good strength and lustre. In an example, a small proportion of ethyl acetate is added to a solution of copper hydroxide and nickel hydroxide in caustic alkali together with a small proportion of glycerin, glycol, tartrate, and sugar. Natural silk fibre is dissolved in the solution which is then extruded through a nozzle into sodium bisulphate, ammonium bisulphate, or sulphuric acid to which has been added ammonium, sodium, or magnesium sulphate, or mixtures of these salts. The filaments are subjected to stretching during the coagulating process. If desired the ethyl acetate may be added after the fibroin has been dissolved. Instead of ethyl acetate, there may be used methyl acetate, amyl acetate, propyl acetate; other alkyl esters of formic, oxalic, citric, tartaric, or acetic acid; or esters such as alkyl chlorides.
