Abstract

Albumens and albuminoids, processes for making artificial silk and like textile materials from; albumens and albuminoids, films or sheets containing.-Filaments, threads, yarns, bristles and other articles are formed by dissolving natural silk in an acid, imparting to the solution the desired shape and then subjecting the solution to the action of a precipitating agent comprising one or more alcohols, e.g. ethyl or methyl alcohol. A strong acid is preferably employed, but not sufficiently strong to impair the silk at the temperature employed. Sulphuric acid of 25-75 per cent, syrupy orthophosphoric acid and hydrochloric acid are specified. To prevent deterioration, low temperatures are employed, e.g. from -10 DEG C. to 10 DEG C., and are preferably maintained during storage, if any, and precipitation. The solution is extruded to form light or heavy filaments. The precipitating bath is preferably of large volume and may include a diluent for the acid and/or neutralizing substances, e.g. sodium, potassium or ammonium hydroxides or acetates. Yarns produced by the invention may be associated with other yarns, e.g. natural silk, cotton, wool or yarns of cellulose acetate or other organic derivatives of cellulose. In an example, 8 kg. of degummed natural silk is added to 25 litres of 50 per cent sulphuric acid cooled to about 0 DEG C., and the cold solution is extruded into a large bath of ethyl alcohol kept at about 0 DEG . The spun threads may be wound by a cup-spinning device, centrifugal pot, &c. and are thoroughly washed to remove traces of acid either prior or subsequent to winding. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the precipitating bath may consist of water or dilute aqueous salt solutions. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
