Abstract
384,971. Course-recording apparatus. SOC. ANON. OFFICINE GALILEO, 24, Via Carlo Bini, Florence, Italy. March 6, 1931, No. 7025. Convention date, March 18, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 97 (ii).] Course-recording apparatus comprises means for decomposing a ship's motion into cartesian coordinates and moving a tracer over a chart accordingly and also means for tracing the path of one or more observed ships by utilizing the polar co-ordinates of the observed motions. In the form shown, the ship's log is adapted to drive two friction discs i, k, which drive small wheels l, m respectively. The distances of the small wheels from the centres of the friction discs are determined by two frames o, n moved by a stud p which rotates about the axis in accordance with the sum of the compass indication of the ship's course and the angle of the path along which the chart has been arranged to move. The rotation of the wheels l, m is thus proportional to the components of the ship's speed resolved in two directions at rightangles. The wheel m drives through gearing a roller for winding the chart whilst the wheel l is geared to means for causing a cursor d carrying a point b to move in a direction transverse to the movement of the chart. The course of an observed ship is indicated by the point c on the alidade a pivoted to the cursor d. The angular movement of the alidade a is controlled through gearing e, f by a sighting telescope, whilst the point c is moved along the bar a by gearing g in accordance with the telemetrical indications. For indicating the courses of two or more observed ships, two or more radial bars may be provided or a single bar may be used to give indications of the courses in sequence. To prevent the courses traced from swerving off the chart the latter may be rotated in its plane thus displacing through gearing h the axes to which the ship's motion is referred. The chart may be arranged so that the cursor d moves only to a slight extent. Indications of the N.S. direction and the time may be periodically marked on the chart.
