Abstract

147,690. Mors (nÚe Bergman), A., and Tardiveau, (nÚe Mors), A. Z. E., (known as Boylesue, A. Z. E.), (Representatives of Mors, L. J. B.). July 30, 1914, [Convention date]. Latitude and longitude instritnients comprise a globe a, illuminated internally and provided with holes n representing well-known constellations. The globe is mounted so as to be rotatable around an axis N-S in a bracket b comprising two circular arms b<1>, b<2> in planes at right-angles to each other. The bracket b is rotatable about an horizontal axis d<1>-d<1> at right-angles to the axis N-S in a ring d which is itself rotatable around the vertical axis Y-Y in a ring h mounted in gimbals j<1>, k<1> in the fixed support k. The ring d carries a bracket e<1> to which is secured a weight e in a damping liquid. Rotations about the axes. N-S and d<1>-d<1> are produced by friction rollers c, f, which are operated by milled heads c<2>, f<2> while rotation around the axis Y-Y is produced by a pinion i gearing with teeth d<2> on the ring d, the pinion i being operated by the milled head i<2>. Graduations E', E<2> are marked on the globe and on the ring b<2>, and are read against verniers V<1>, V<2> carried by the arm b<2> and the ring d respectively. The upper surface of the ring d is also graduated and a vernier V<3> is mounted on the ring h. The sighting-device comprises a pair of oculars p', p<2> slidably mounted on a graduated arc o which is mounted on the support k so as to be rotatable around the vertical axis. The oculars are provided with right-angle reflectors p<3>, p' perpendicular to each other. The observer adjusts the sighting-device so as to bring a convenient constellation into the field of the ocular p<2> and then manipulates the globe until the corresponding constellation thereon is seen through the ocular p<1>. From the position of the globe the latitude and longitude are deduced, the time of the observation being known.
