Abstract

383,322. Smoke-producing bombs and compositions. MITCHELL, V. E. S., War Oflice, London. Aug. 11, 1931, No. 22722. [Class 81 (i).] A bomb for producing smoke on striking the ground after dropping from an aircraft to indicate the direction of the wind contains two or more glass vessels d containing chemicals and means such as a heavy disc in the rear or a front plunger i for breaking these vessels on impact whereupon the chemicals react and produce smoke. Alternatively, one vessel is placed above the other to cause the break-up on impact. The vessels may be packed in cotton wool or held in place by tongues bent from the enclosing casing a, which may be formed with perforations b in various places and may be provided with a winged tail c. One vessel mav contain ammonia and the other titanium tetrachloride or stannic chloride or silicon tetrachloride.
