382,486. Smoke-consuming devices for furnaces. HUWYLER, O., 71, Ausstellungs Strasse, Vienna. Jan. 22, 1932, No. 1979. Convention date, June 30, 1931. [Class 51 (i).] A smoke-consuming device for a furnace, particularly for a locomotive, fitted with a nozzle manifold directing fan-shape jets of steam above the air entering through the firedoor, is characterized by the provision of a guideplate B, which may be tiltable, above the manifold A, which prevents deviation of the jets by the incoming air current and prevents air from passing between the individual jets near the nozzle. The top wall of the combustion chamber on the top of the firedoor opening may be utilized, in combination with the guide-plate B, by positioning the latter as for example at A<1> or All. The nozzle may also be tiltable. The individual jets impinge just above the tips of the flames and to effect uniform suction of air the jets, at the nozzle, are dimensioned, in cross section, proportionally to the distance to be travelled. The jets are preferably arranged in two parts X, Y, with a fire gap Z between, the jets S5, S<1>5 having the largest bores in the manifold, whilst the jets S1, S<1>1 have the smallest bores. In large furnaces a narrow jet may be arranged to traverse the space Z. Specification 8217/91 [Class 51, Furnaces and kilns], is referred to.
