381,253. Polishing cutlery &c. PORTER-McLEOD MACHINE TOOL CO., Hatfield, Massachusetts, U.S.A. July 13, 1931, No. 20051. Convention date, Feb. 14. [Class 60.] Wheels.-A machine for polishing and buffing cutlery &c. consists of two polishing rolls 2, 3, a slide 4 reciprocable transversely of the rolls, and a slide 6 reciprocable on the slide 4 parallel to the rolls and carrying a work-support 8. The roll 2 is carried by a shaft 10 journalled in arms 11, 12 secured to a rocker shaft 13 mounted in uprights 14 secured to a base 1 with interposed pads 19 of rubber, and the shaft is driven directly by an electric motor 17 mounted on an extension of the arm 12 ; the roll 3 is similarly mounted on arms 21, 22 secured to a rocker shaft 23 and driven by a motor 26. The shafts 13, 23 are geared together by gear segments, and are adjusted, to move the rolls apart or together, by a turnbuckle 29, to suit the thickness of the work. The slide 4 is moved in a guide 36 by a pin 37, and the slide 6 is moved in a guide 40 by a pin 41, the pin 37 being pivoted to a link 591 connected to an arm 59 pivoted at 66 to the casing of the machine and slotted at 62 for adjustable engagement with a link 60, which engages a crank 58 on a shaft 52. The shaft 52 is driven by worm gearing from a motor 47 and also carries a large gear wheel 67 engaging a small gear 68 on a shaft 69 carrying a crank 70, which, through a link 71, a lever 72, and a link 74 moves the pin 41 and the slide 6 ; the stroke of the slide 4 is greater than that of the slide 6, and the frequency of reciprocation of the slide 6 is several times that of the slide 4, the frequencies preferably being such that the path of the work varies constantly. The work-support comprises posts 80 on which is placed a clamp consisting of a lower bar 82 grooved at 83 to receive loosely, on pins 85, the handles of the blades 84, and an upper bar 86 held in position by a nut 87 ; the blades can thus adjust themselves to contact uniformly with the rolls. The rolls consist of discs of felt 90 spaced apart by smaller fibre discs 91 and clamped by nuts 93.
