Reciprocating and rotating tool machines.-In a machine for stretching and pressing hides, a rotatable table carrying a setting-out board is provided, the table being adapted to be moved into successive engagement with an eccentrically-mounted clamping device and with a hide stretching and pressing device reciprocable from a position between the clamp and the axis of rotation of the table to the farther edge of the table. The setting-out board 22 is supported on a table 14, Figs. 1 and 2, journaled in a frame 13 supported by a pedestal 12 in a standard 11. The table is provided with rollers 16 by which it is movable on the frame 13, and with stops 17 engageable by a spring- pressed detent 20 for holding it in one of two positions. The frame 13 is connected by links 33 and pairs of pivoted levers 29 to links 35 adapted to be actuated by a treadle 38, the frame and associated parts being counterbalanced by a weight 39. Depression of the treadle results in the raising of the table 14 so that a hide supported on the board 22 is engaged by a spring- pressed clamp 24 extending transversely across the machine. The clamp serves to hold the hide in position while it is pressed and stretched by a rotating roller 44 provided with helical and straight blades 45, 46 respectively. The roller is rotated by gearing from an electric motor mounted on a carriage supporting the roller and consisting of side members 47, 48 and cross-bars 49. The shaft of the roller is provided with rollers running in a track formed by members 53, 56 of the machine frame, and the roller carriage is also provided with rollers 51 running on top of the members 53. The carriage is provided with lugs 75 attached by links 73 to crank-pins 72 on flywheels 71 driven from a shaft 66 so that the roller is reciprocated. The speed of rotation of the roller is greater than the speed of reciprocation. In use, the table is raised to cause the hide to be clamped by the clamp 24 along one edge, the lifting of the table being timed so that the roller 44, during its outward travel, engages the hide at about the middle so as to stretch it and press it on to the setting-out board, adhesive being previously applied to the hide so that it is secured to the board. The movement of the roller causes the hide to be progressively secured to the board and stretched from the part pasted down instead of from the clamp 24. The table is then rotated 180‹ and the operation is repeated; the position of the hide is then changed to enable it to be similarly treated in directions at 90‹ to the previous operations. The board 22 is preferably resilient to allow for irregularities in the hide surface. In a modification, the levers 29 are provided with toothed quadrants at their outer ends and engage gears 41, Fig. 4, running 'on fixed racks 42 and provided with crank arms 43 connected to the links 33.
