Abstract
379,550. Fumigating. SACHS, E., 10A, Manteuffelstrasse, Lichterfelde- West, Berlin. Oct. 16, 1931, No. 28839. [Class. 81 (i).] In order to produce a spray or jet of vapour containing a substance of high boiling point for combating pests a substance is heated in a closed container and a liquid of boiling point lower than the temperature in the container is admitted so that explosive evaporation occurs on the surface of the heated substance. A suitable apparatus comprises an insulated electrically-heated vessel a for the heated liquid to which the more volatile liquid is admitted from a dosing apparatus i, controlled by a cock k, through an inlet pipe m which may be prolonged as shown so as to preheat the liquid. The vapour &c. produced is led off through an outlet f having a branch g to which a tube h is connected. The substance to be vaporized may be that which is heated in the container, e.g. sulphur or beta naphthol are so heated and vaporized by the addition of water ; or the substance may be dissolved in the added liquid. According to examples stated to be useful for treating the air in greenhouses, sulphur is heated in the container until vapour begins to be evolved and water is then added, or a mixture of nicotine, beta naphthol, glycerine and isobutyl alcohol is heated in the container and water or an aqueous solution of glycerine is added. Nicotine may be dissolved in the added water. It is stated in the Specification that it has been known to fumigate with the vapours of perchlorethane, chloroformic acid ester, decahydronaphthalene, beta naphthol, isobutyl alcohol, and glycerine.
