Abstract

A preparation for destroying plant pests contains arsenic trisulphide in a colloidal form and is prepared by precipitating the sulphide, for instance by the addition of sulphuretted hydrogen, from a saturated solution of arsenious oxide containing a protective colloid. The reaction is carried out at low temperature (about 0 DEG C.) and preferably with agitation of the solution. The arsenious oxide used is preferably in the vitreous form. This may be added slowly in powder form to cold water during strong agitation or may be dissolved in warm or hot water to form a saturated solution which may be subsequently cooled without depositing crystals. A suitable protective colloid consists of a water extract of pine branches and pine needles concentrated until it contains 50 per cent of organic substances. Traces of alcohol or ether may be added to the arsenic solution to prevent frothing.ALSO:A concentrated solution of arsenious acid for use in preparing colloidal arsenic trisulphide is prepared by slowly adding powdered vitreous arsenious oxide to cold water during strong agitation or by dissolving the vitreous oxide in hot water to form a saturated solution which may subsequently be cooled without depositing crystals.
