[Class 122 (i).] To limit distortion of the piston skirt the gudgeon pin bosses d of a light metal piston are separated from the skirt by slots f and connected to the head and skirt by ribs e in the vertical plane passing through the gudgeon pin axis. The bosses may be slotted as in Fig. 2 or circumferential slots, Fig. 8, may be formed in the skirt extending partially or wholly around the periphery of the bosses. The piston may be of oval cross section with the major diameter at right-angles to the axis of the gudgeon pin. Transverse slots C separate the head and skirt. Heat conducting ribs extending from the gudgeon pin bosses to the piston head may be cast integrally with the rib e.
