Abstract
Fabrics or yarns are shrunk by submitting them in a moist, damp, or wet condition for a length of time varying from 5 to 60 minutes to the action of steam, preferably saturated steam, at a temperature of 212 DEG F. or over, the fabric or yarn being in a tensionless state to allow for free and complete shrinkage. The <PICT:0375945/IV/1> cloth A is wetted in a vessel B and passes between rollers b<2> on to a conveyer belt D in a chest C supplied with saturated steam. The cloth is removed by nip-rollers c, the speed of which is adjusted to the shrinkage which has taken place in the cloth. The cloth may also be wetted out and rippled on a tray or wagon and inserted in a steam chest. Yarns may be similarly shrunk by placing them loosely on the tray or wagon.
