Abstract
375,387. Driving gearing for electric vehicles. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH & C0: (ENGINEERS), Ltd., SIR W. G. and IONIDES, P. D., 22, Great Smith Street, London. March 24, 1931, No. 9021. [Class 79 (ii).] In an electric rail or other vehicle having a motor A with its shaft D parallel to the driven shaft or axle K and connected by a universal joint C to a driving shaft B, the shaft B at its outer end is connected by a further universal joint E to a pinion F engaging a spur wheel G driving the vehicle wheel H, the pinion F being mounted in a bearing in a gear-case or bracket J enclosing the spur-wheel and surrounding the axle, while the gear case is supported from the vehicle frame at a point L so as to allow it to move freely about this point. The motor A is fixed to the vehicle frame and the universal joints and hollow motor shaft D allow relative movement between the motor and axle. The gear case J is connected to the vehicle frame at L by spring or rubber buffers. According to the Provisional Specification, (1) the driving shaft may be at right-angles to the driven shaft, and (2) the driving and driven shafts may be hollow.
