Abstract

375,050. Wrapping cigarette packets. MOLINS, W. E., 2, Evelyn Street, Deptford, London. June 1, 1931, No. 15949. [Class 94 (i).] The invention comprises a machine for wrapping cigarette packets or similar articles in wrappers of the kind and by the method described in Specification 375,049, a fluid such as gum or celluloid solvent being applied to secure the folds of the envelope so that when dry the envelope is airtight. As shown, a blank 1 is severed from a web la, adhesive being applied by a ridged roller 6 dipping into a gum bath 8. Packets are fed from the magazine 3 by pusher-pieces 4 of the chain converyer 5, the packet pushing the blank into a U-shape through folding mechanism 9 having its working faces hollowed out so that they touch the wrapper only on sharp edges, which pick up little gum. The corners of these folders are preferably formed by rollers, from which any gum picked up may be removed by scrapers. The block-end tucks 10 and the side flaps 11, 12 are thus folded down as shown in Fig. 14. The open end is then closed by first making the tucks 13, and for this purpose mechanism such as that described in Specification 214,792, [Class 94 (i), Packing &c.], may be used with additional parts mentioned below. The blank may be gummed as shown in Figs. 4 or 11. In the former case the tucks 13 are made by pawls 15 the lower faces of which are gummed by wheels 17 rotating in gum baths 18, and the upper faces by wheels 19 which, by means of cams 20, periodically touch the wheels 17; when the tucks 13 are made, the edges of the flaps 26, 24, Fig. 7, are thus gummed. The flap 24 is then folded up and gum is applied simultaneously by a roller (not shown) moving periodically into contact with another roller (not shown) rotating in a gum bath. The almost wrapped packet is then moved beneath the stacker 21, and upwards by a table 22 reciprocated by a cam 23, the flap 26 being folded down by the edge of the stacker. If the blank is gummed as shown in Fig. 11, the side flaps 12 are folded down by folders 28 pivoted at 29 and operated by cams 30 and springs 31. As the rear end of the packet approaches, the folders 28 open to avoid picking up gum from the streaks 1c, wire guides 32 retaining the gummed flaps 11 in position during this movement. The tucks 13 are then made, in this case by hollowed-out tucks which pick up little gum. The flaps 24, 26 are then folded down as in the first case ; or a streak of gum for sealing may be applied for this purpose simultaneously with the other streaks. The ungummed side of the blank may be waterproofed by applying wax to the major portion thereof. The envelope may be made of the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Cellophane," in which case the liquid used would be a suitable solvent.
