Abstract
374,558. Tin &c. openers. STURTE. VANT, S. H., 3, Lanbury Road, Nunhead, London. April 1, 1931, No. 9930. [Class 66.] In an appliance for opening tins and like receptacles, of the type comprising a pivoted pair of levers one of which carries a cutter and the other rotatable toothed means for moving the tin, the cutter 10 is rigidly held on one side of the lever 1 by means of a supporting plate 11 and screw-threaded means 9, 12, and a flanged pin, or, as shown, the head 19 of the screw 9 projects from the opposite side of the lever to be received within a recess 20 in the lever 2 when the device is in use. The toothed wheel 16 carried on the lever 2 is adapted to be rotated by a winged member 17, and one of the levers carries a trigger arm 22 a recess in which engages with a pin 21 on the other to hold the levers in the operative position. The levers are pressed from sheet material, the handle ends being shaped to provide gripping surfaces, and are preferably fulcrummed together by means of a tubular member 5 the ends of which are burred over to engage with washers 6. The cutter 10 and plate 11 may be slotted to permit of adjustment, and the cutter has its cutting edge 13 arranged to facilitate piercing of the tin. The device may be used in the horizontal or vertical position to cut either the side or the end of the tin.
