Abstract
In the production of higher hydrocarbons according to the parent Specification, in which aliphatic hydrocarbons are heated in two stages, first to a temperature above 1600 DEG C. for less than 0,001 second, and then to a lower temperature in apparatus having hot and cold walls, the first stage is now modified by reducing the minimum temperature to 1120 DEG C. and increasing the maximum time of heating to 0,5 second. In the first stage, in which acetylene is produced, it is advantageous to employ a reduced pressure down to 0,05 atmosphere, while in the second stage higher pressure, say between 0,05 and 10 atmospheres, may be used. Examples are given of the treatment of pure methane and of a gas containing 65 per cent of methane, the cooling surface for the second stage being maintained by passing water through a tube arranged concentrically within a wider tube.
