Abstract
261,267. Petrole Synthetique, Soc. Anon., and Folliet, A. April 29, 1926. Olefines.-In treating methane to yield hydrogeu and hydrocarbons (mainly olefines) of higher carbon content, a thin stream of methane is gradually and uniformly heated, and the reaction products are cooled suddenly and hept under reduced pressure until completely cooled. The methane may be treated in a thin annular stream having a thickness of about 1 mm. and the reaction temperature may reach 950‹ C. under a reduced pressure of 20 cm. of mercury. Suitable apparatus comprises a number of refractory tubes 1 connected in series by tubes 4, each tube 1 being mounted within a metal tube 10 and containing a refractory cylindrical core 2. The tubes 10 are fitted in chambers 3a - - 3<c> which communicate with a heated chamber 3 and with a chamber 3<d> leading to a flue. In operation, gas admitted through the tube 4<1> flows in a thin annular stream through the tubes 1 and the reaction products are drawn through a cooler 6 by a pump 8.
