372,653. Smallarms. KNOLLER, E., Steyr, Austria. Aug. 29, 1931, No. 24374. Convention date, Oct. 13, 1930. [Class 119.] A box magazine for a double row of cartridges with projecting rims arranged in echelon formation has a device for holding down the second cartridge so that a space is formed between the first and second cartridges to permit the rim of the first to move freely forward clear of the rim of the second during the feed into the cartridge chamber. One form of the device consists of a member f pivoted to the rear wall of the magazine and provided with forwardly-projecting side flanges f<2> which act alternately to hold down the second cartridge y on one side or the other as shown in Figs. 1a and 3a, the member oscillating from one side to the other as the first cartridge x is removed from the corresponding magazine lip c<1> by the advancing breech bolt b. This bolt may be provided with a projection b<1> to engage a notch f<3> in the member to bring it to the central position when the breech is closed. Fig. 4 shows an alternative form of member comprising a laterally movable spring leaf with projection g for holding down the cartridge y and spacing it from the cartridge x. An incline on the projection is engaged by the cartridges during charging to move the leaf rearwards.
