resident of East :tford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have 1 ted new and Improved Magazines for Firea s, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the class of devices employed for containing cartridges and for delivering them into position to be inserted in tlie breeches of the barrels of firearms, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a particularly strong and durable structure of this class that shall operate not only to deliver the cartridges as above described but shall also retain the breechbolt in its opened position after the last cartridge has been fired.

One form of device embodying my inv n- 1 ion and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a pistol provided with my improved magazine, parts being cut away to show construction.

Figure 2 is a detail view of a blank from which my improved magazine follower is formed.

Figure 3 is a view showing the blank after the first step in the operation of forming the breech-bolt retainer.

In the accompanying drawings the numoral (5 indicates the handle, 7 the barrel, 8 the breech-bolt and 9 the magazine of a firearm, all of which parts, with the exception of the magazine, may be of any well known construction, and as my improvement relates especially to the magazine a further and detailed description of other parts of the firearm is omitted herein. as the application of the invention will be readily understood without such by those skilled in the art.

The magazine 9, as to its general construc tion, is the same as those in use at the present time and it has lips 10 at the upper end to preventmovement of the cartridges directly out of the magazine at its end and a follower spring 11 in its lower end arranged in any suitable manner.

follower of this magazine, which follower embodies a table 12 having downturned guide flanges 1314 at its front and rear ends, respectively, properly positioned to guide the follower in its movements lengthwise within the magazine and to prevent cramping action of the follower in such movements. A breech-bolt retainer 15 projects upwardly above the surface of the table 12 and this comprises a material part of my invention in the manner of its formation. The follower is preferably made from sheet metal and it is essential that the retainer shall be of the strongest construction as much force is brought to bear against it by the breech-bolt in its contact therewith. In constructing this retainer I take a strip 16 of sheet metal of proper width and form a U-SllElPQtl cut 17 therein thus providing a retainer blank 18. The strip of metal is next 3 int on the dotted line 19 to form the table 12, the blank 18 not being disturbed with respect to its support, (the flange 1a) in this bending operation, but projecting above the table in line with said flange 1th. The blank comprising the retainer is thus maintained in its original form without any weakening thereof by bending operations. After this operation the table portion may be further bent to form the guide 13 and the follower thus formed may be mounted upon the spring 11 in any suitable mannen In the placing of cartridges in magazines it is common practice at the present time to place the butt end of the cartridge shell in the opening at the front upper edge of the magazine and with the thumb pressing downwardly against the tension of the spring 11 to pass the cartridge under the lips 10. This operation is liable to cause an noyance for the reason that the contact of the thumb with the lips is liable to tear or wear the skin from the thumb. To obviate this I provide a depressor 20 in the form of a button that is secured to a projection 21 extending downwardly from one edge of the table 12, this depressor projecting through a slot 22 in the wall of the magazine in position to be en aged by the thumb of one hand of the person holding a magazine while the thumb of another hand may be used to push the cartridge into place. It will thus be seen that the thumb employed for pushing the cartridges into place is not required to press the spring downwardly and the liability to injury of the thumb by low Ill)

forcible contact with the lip as above described is avoided.

I claim 1. A firearm magazine follower bent from sheet metal and comprising a floor, a flange arranged at an angle to said floor, and a breech-bolt retainer of less Width'than said flange and projecting as an extension therefrom and with its flat surface on both sides flush-with the flat surface of both sides of said flange.

2. A follower for EI-fil'efllll'l magazine, said follower comprising a floor, a flange projecting therefrom at one end, and a breech-bolt retainer formed and struck up from metal formerly contained in said floor and projecting upwardly from the end of said flange.

The method of forming a breech-bolt retainer for a firearm that consists in cutting through a strip of metal, and then bending the part containing said out at an angle to another portion of the strip thus leaving a projection extending in prolongation of such other portion of the strip.

4. A firearm magazine having a slot in its side wall and a follower bent from sheet metal and comprising a depressor supporting flange located at one end of the follower and bent at an angle to its support, integrally formed therewith and very narrow as compared with the length of said support, a depressor projecting from said flange through said slot, and a spring topress the follower toward the mouth of the magazine.

5. A firearm magazine follower bent from sheet metal and comprising a floor, a depressor supporting flange projecting from the edge at one end of the follower and located at an angle thereto, and a depressor projecting at an angle from said flange said depressor being formed integral with said flange and very narrow as compared with the length of said floor.
