Abstract
368,015. Feeding means for grinding and mixing machines. JENSEN, C. A., 77, Chancery Lane, London.-(Bessemer Cement Corporation ; 30, West Federal Street, Youngstown, Ohio, U.S.A.) Jan. 26, 1931, No. 2564. [Classes 59 and 86.] Means for feeding material to a rotary cylinder 8 for grinding, polishing, mixing or any other treatment comprises a fixed delivery hopper or the like 14 and a series of spaced openings 16 in the circumferential wall of the cylinder so arranged that as the cylinder rotates there is always an opening adjacent the delivery means so that there is a continuous entry of material into the cylinder. As shown applied to a rotary cement kiln the slurry &c. is fed from a travelling belt 13 into the hopper 14 arranged to register with a band of holes 16 in the shell of the rotary cylinder 8, the strips 17 separating the holes being inclined and the holes being of greater width than the opening of the hopper. Angel-iron vanes 18, 19 guide the material into the holes. A casing 20 fixed to the hopper 14 encloses the cylinder 8 to collect material falling through the holes 16 when in their lower positions, such material being carried upwards by the vanes 18, 19 until it reaches a position such that it falls by gravity into the cylinder 8. The material may be crushed between the vanes 18, 19 and the casing 20. The material falling into the cylinder forms a curtain tending to extract loose dust from the heated gases passing through the cylinder. The seal between the fixed casing 20 and the rotating cylinder 8 comprises annular flanges 21, Fig. 5, on the casing against which annular rings 22 slidable on the cylinder are pressed by springs 25 surrounding bolts 24 passing through angle irons 23. A hood 15 forms a seal for the end of the belt 13 and the mouth of the hopper 14. Dust is removed from the gases in a chamber 12 and may be again fed into the cylinder. The material may be admitted directly from the belt 13 into the cylinder. Spiral vanes 26 and grinding and polishing materials such as balls may be provided in the cylinder.
