Abstract
367,633. Compound glass. 1. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES., Frankfort-on-Main, Germany. April 28, 1931, No. 12526. Convention date, April 28, 1930. Addition to 349,283. [Class 140.] Splinterless glass is made by interposing between sheets of glass layers of a polyvinyl alcohol or a derivative thereof capable of dissolving or swelling in water. Softening agents such as poly-ethylene oxide may be added. The polyvinyl alcohols are preferably highly viscous and elastic. The polyvinyl alcohol derivatives may be obtained by partially saponifying polyvinyl esters, by partially esterifying polyvinyl alcohols, by saponifying halogen fatty acid esters of polyvinyl alcohols, and by reacting polyvinyl alcohols with ethylene oxide as described in Specification 364,323, [Group V], or with aldehydes as described in Specification 356,408, [Group V]. Films of the polyvinyl alcohol or derivatives thereof may be prepared from aqueous or alcoholic solutions and placed between sheets of glass or attached thereto by adhesive layers prepared, for example, from gelatine or solutions of polyvinyl compounds in organic solvents or the films may be formed directly on the glass sheets. The assembly is then hot pressed.
