Abstract
364,151. Aircraft; rotary propellers. DAVIES, H. R., 558, Wyndham Road, Teaneck, New Jersey, U.S.A. Sept. 30, 1930, No. 29261. Convention date, Oct. 3, 1929. [Class 4.] An aeroplane, seaplane, or amphibian is provided with one or more rotating rollers, driven by air turbines or by the main engine, arranged near and towards the rear of the main aerofoil but wholly forward of the trailing edge so as to improve the airflow over the aerofoil as well as to furnish additional lift due to the Magnus effect. Fig. 1 shows a plan of an aeroplane having a roller 10 above the main plane driven by an air turbine 30 having its lower circumference shrouded by the fuselage. The roller has discs 40 at its ends. The turbine 30 carries planet rollers 32a, Fig. 9, co-operating with fixed rings 32 and drums 37 on the two halves of the roller which is journalled on a shaft 35 so that the roller is driven at a higher speed than the turbine. The turbine acts in the slip stream from the main propeller 18. An amphibian is described with a similar roller mounted above the main wing with a central air turbine clear of the wing surface. Other machines are described with rollers beneath the main plane on each side of the fuselage and driven by separate turbines, and in some cases an additional roller above the plane and in another modification two additional rollers below the first mentioned rollers are provided.
