[Class 120 (ii).] In quick-traverse machines for winding bobbins, such as weft and bottle bobbins, and particularly for winding artificial silk, in which the traverse guides are moved step by step to build the bobbins by control mechanism operating without contact with the material, the guide rod is slidably mounted in a member traversed by swashplate and carrying a toothed crown rotated by control mechanism to displace the guide rod. It is desirable that the winding spindle be driven in accordance with the diameter being wound to ensure uniform travel of the material during the winding. The swashplate 18, mounted on a shaft 5 driven from a disc 2 through a wheel 3 and driving the spindles oscillates a member 19 in which a screwed rod 21 carrying the yarn guides is progressed by means of a nut in a toothed crown 22. A long pinion 25 engages the toothed crown 22 and at the end of each traverse is partly rotated by adjustable ratchet gear 30 operated by a feeler 34 on the member 19, or it may be continuously rotated by adjustable gearing comprising stepped pinions from the shaft 5. The swashplate may be displaced longitudinally to effect the build by similar means to that above described for displacing the guide. The nut in the crown 22 is divided and spring-controlled, and may be disconnected by longitudinal movement of a tube 20a, Fig. 7. Guides 37, 38, Fig. 3a, for two spindles are carried by the rod 21 and are guided so as not to contact with the bobbin during the traverse by slots 39, Fig. 1a, in a member 40, which is slidably mounted on a rod 41 and displaced longitudinally with the rod 21 by means of a stop 42.
