Abstract

362,748. Friction clutches. WRIGHT AERONAUTICAL CORPORATION, Paterson, New Jersey, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Chilton, R. ; 26, Midwood Road, Ridgewood, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Jan. 29, 1931, No. 2947. Convention date, May 15, 1930. [Class 80 (ii).] A yielding coupling incorporated in a gear train for driving a member having considerable inertia, such as an aircraft engine supercharger, comprises a split expansible driving band 6 which is spread into frictional driving engagement with a driven gear wheel 10, by the centrifugal force of an inner floating split weighted ring 8 made up of six segments, resiliently connected as shown or independent, and driven only by friction and the viscosity of the oil film. The band 6 is driven through intermeshing teeth 5 at one side end only by a partially toothed flange 4 which co-operates with a bolted flange 2 to retain the parts on the driving wheel 9. The torque transmitted in one direction is greater than that in the other and the coupling allows slip under excessive strain such as on sudden acceleration of the engine and overrun such as on sudden deceleration, the sudden variations in speed being either cyclic, such as due to torsional vibration in the engine crank shaft, or otherwise.
