Abstract
358,789. Shock absorbing transmission. JUNKERS, H., 21, Kaiserplatz, Dessau, Anhalt, Germany. Dec. 2, 1930, No. 36318. Convention date, Dec. 14, 1929. [Class 80 (ii).] Mechanism for transmission of energy from engines or motors with periodically fluctuating torque, to aircraft propellers, includes an elastic member interposed in the revolving transmission mechanism and so dimensioned as to prevent resonance of the specific frequency of the revolving parts during fluctuations in the engine torque in the range of higher engine speeds, and a clutch in the transmission mechanism, in series with the elastic member, said clutch having a slip torquespeed characteristic which follows approximately the same law as the torque-absorbed-speed characteristic of the propeller. In one form, the elastic member takes the form of a long shaft 2, Figs. 1 and 2, of low natural period of oscillation. The clutch consists of cross-arms 11 mounted rigidly on the engine shaft 10 and carrying radially displaceable bobs 12 exposed to the action of centrifugal force and which are provided with frictional facings 13 bearing against a clutch plate 14 mounted on the shaft 2. Weak springs 15 produce an auxiliary initial pressure between the friction surfaces. In a modification, the propeller is mounted on the engine shaft 20, Figs. 3 and 4, which carries centrifugal bobs 23 having frictional facings 27. The drive is transmitted from the engine to the propeller through the bobs 23 engaging a torque plate 28 and through the intermediary of springs 33 situated between projections on the torque plate 28 and a plate 32 secured to the propeller.
