Abstract
362,725. Optical focusing-devices. BARR & STROUD, Ltd. and FRENCH, J. W., Caxton Street, Anniesland, Glasgow. Jan. 13, 1931, No. 1113. [Class 97 (i).] An optical focusing device is provided with extensible means arranged to prevent access of air or atmospheric moisture to the instrument through the space between the members of the device which are relatively displaceable in the process of focusing. Fig. 2 shows a focusing eyepiece in which a lens A is mounted in a tube 2 which can be displaced within a tube 3. The means for excluding moisture &c. comprises, in the form shown, a flexible sleeve 9 attached at one end 6 to the tube 2 and at the other end 7 to a base 8 associated with the support 3. Fig. 4 shows the invention applied to an eyepiece having mechanical focusing, the longitudinal movement of the tube 2 being effected by rotating a sleeve 11 having on its inner surface a helical scroll engaging a corresponding recessed scroll on the outer surface of the tube 2. Rotation of the tube 2 is prevented by a pin 15 entering a hole in the member 3, and longitudinal movement of the sleeve 11 is prevented by a ring 13. An inner tube 14 is provided to support the flexible sleeve 9 and prevent the latter from sagging inwards.
