Abstract
575,871. Optical apparatus. BOARDMAN, E. April 19, 1944, No. 7230. [Class 97 (i)] An apparatus for teaching optics comprises an outer rectangular box A closed at one end by two spaced partitions having coaxial apertures therein and an inner rectangular sleeve B slidable in the box A and having a translucent screen S fitted at a point one-third to onequarter of the length of the sleeve B from one end, scales being marked on the exterior surfaces. The spaced partitions form a pocket which has notches V for supporting suitably mounted lenses, mirrors, or diaphragms, the plane containing the notches being the base line for the scales on the inner sleeve. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a Z-shaped piece of metal, inserted into the inner sleeve from the viewing end, has an aperture cut in the end which abuts against the screen ; rays from this aperture after reflection from a mirror held in the notches, form an image on the screen which may be viewed through an aperture in the other end of the Z-shaped piece. The apparatus may be used to demonstrate optical phenomena and for obtaining optical data.
