Abstract
361,521. Shock - absorbers ; dooroperating mechanism. HEVERLY, E. LA M., 6629, Oshkosh Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A. Oct. 10, 1930, No. 30402. Convention date, Oct. 14, 1929. [Class 108 (iii).] In the application of shockabsorbers to horizontally movable doors in which a vertical dooroperating cylinder is connected to an hydraulic shock absorber having a horizontal cylinder, the operating member for the shock absorber is located above the shock absorber cylinder and comprises a toothed sector actuating a rack on the piston. The liquid is forced from each end of the cylinder through two passages and thence through adjustable plugs, one of the passages being covered at times by the piston. Horizontally movable doors are operated from a lever 12, Fig. 1, through mechanism not shown, the lever being actuated by connections 11, 9 from the piston rod 8 of a fluid pressure cylinder 2. A link 14 extends downwards to the operating arm 16 of the shock absorber, shown also in Fig. 2. The arm 16 reciprocates the piston 19 through a toothed sector 21, intermediate pinion 20 and rack. The ends of the cylinder are each connected to the intermediate reservoir by ports 31, 32, Fig. 4, controlled by adjustable plugs 34, one of which is shown also in Fig. 5. The piston covers one of the ports 31 towards the ends of its stroke. The plugs have two diameters each with a groove running lengthwise, and may be screwed in or out. A complete revolution results in a small lengthwise adjustment while a partial revolution effects a greater change in the size of the throttling orifice.
